Whisper vs Parakeet: which local ASR should you test first?

Whisper wins on ecosystem maturity and model-size flexibility. Parakeet v3 is compelling when its explicit European language set matches your needs and you want a modern high-throughput model.

Language coverage

Whisper is broadly multilingual. Parakeet v3 currently lists 25 European languages, including Slovenian, Croatian, Czech, Slovak, Polish, German, French, Italian and others.

Hardware and runtimes

Whisper offers sizes from tiny to turbo and a huge range of runtimes. OpenAI publishes approximate VRAM numbers. Parakeet is a 600M model and now has multiple local formats, including a Q8 GGUF in its official repository.

Streaming

Neither plain Whisper nor Parakeet v3 should be confused with a purpose-built native streaming ASR architecture. If native streaming is the deciding requirement, compare against models such as Nemotron 3.5 Streaming or Qwen3-ASR.
